Tandoori chicken is a popular Indian dish known for its smoky and flavorful taste. It is traditionally cooked in a tandoor (clay oven), but you can also make it using a grill or oven. Here’s a recipe for Tandoori Chicken:
Preparation time: 15 minutes (plus marinating time)
Cooking time: 25-30 minutes
Ready in: 40-45 minutes (plus marinating time)
Ingredients:
- 1 kg chicken (cut into pieces or use chicken drumsticks)
- 1 cup plain yogurt
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 2 tablespoons tandoori masala (available in stores or homemade)
- 1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste
- 1 teaspoon red chili powder (adjust according to your spice preference)
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon cumin powder
- 1 teaspoon coriander powder
- 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
- Salt to taste
- Fresh cilantro leaves for garnishing
- Lemon wedges for serving
Instructions:
- In a large bowl, combine yogurt, lemon juice, vegetable oil, tandoori masala, ginger-garlic paste, red chili powder, turmeric powder, cumin powder, coriander powder, garam masala, and salt. Mix well to form a smooth marinade.
- Add the chicken pieces to the marinade and coat them evenly. Make sure the chicken is well coated with the marinade. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight for the flavors to develop.
- Preheat your grill or oven to medium-high heat.
- If using a grill, grease the grates with some oil to prevent sticking. Place the marinated chicken pieces on the grill and cook for about 15-20 minutes, turning occasionally, until the chicken is cooked through and has charred edges.
- If using an oven, preheat it to 200°C (400°F). Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and place a wire rack on top. Arrange the marinated chicken pieces on the wire rack and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through and nicely charred.
- Once cooked, remove the tandoori chicken from the grill or oven and let it rest for a few minutes.
- Garnish with fresh cilantro leaves and serve hot with lemon wedges on the side.
Tandoori chicken is typically served with naan bread, rice, or a side salad. You can also serve it with mint chutney or yogurt dip for added flavor. Enjoy this delicious and aromatic dish that captures the essence of Indian cuisine!
