North-Style Safed Dal is a creamy and flavorful lentil dish commonly prepared in North Indian cuisine. It is made with split urad dal (white lentils) cooked to perfection with aromatic spices. Here is the recipe with cooking time, prepare time, ready time, and ingredients:
Cooking time: 30 minutes
Prep time: 10 minutes
Ready time: 40 minutes
Ingredients:
- 1 cup split urad dal (white lentils)
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 tomatoes, finely chopped
- 2 green chilies, slit
- 1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon red chili powder
- 1 teaspoon garam masala
- 1/4 cup fresh cream
- 2 tablespoons ghee (clarified butter)
- Salt to taste
- Chopped coriander leaves for garnish
Instructions:
- Wash the split urad dal thoroughly and soak it in water for about 30 minutes.
- Drain the soaked dal and transfer it to a pressure cooker. Add 3 cups of water and a pinch of salt. Pressure cook for about 4-5 whistles or until the dal is cooked and soft.
- In a separate pan, heat ghee over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
- Add chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
- Add ginger-garlic paste and sauté for a minute until the raw smell disappears.
- Add chopped tomatoes, green chilies, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Cook until the tomatoes turn soft and mushy.
- Once the dal is cooked, add it to the pan and mix well with the onion-tomato mixture.
- Add garam masala and adjust the consistency by adding water if needed. Simmer for 5-10 minutes to allow the flavors to blend.
- Stir in fresh cream and cook for another minute.
- Garnish with chopped coriander leaves.
- Serve hot with rice, roti, or naan.
Note: You can adjust the spices according to your taste preferences. If you prefer a thinner consistency, you can add more water while cooking.
