Karuppu Kondakadalai Sundal, also known as Black Chickpea Sundal, is a traditional South Indian snack made with black chickpeas. It is a nutritious and protein-rich dish that is often served during festivals or as a healthy evening snack. Here’s the recipe:

Preparation time: 8 hours (for soaking chickpeas)
Cooking time: 20 minutes
Ready in: 8 hours 20 minutes

Ingredients:
  • 1 cup black chickpeas (karuppu kondakadalai)
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon urad dal (split black gram)
  • A pinch of asafoetida (hing)
  • 2-3 dried red chillies, broken into pieces
  • 8-10 curry leaves
  • 2 green chillies, finely chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Grated coconut (optional)
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnishing
Instructions:
  1. Rinse the black chickpeas (karuppu kondakadalai) under running water and soak them in enough water overnight or for at least 8 hours.
  2. After soaking, drain the water from the chickpeas and rinse them again.
  3. In a pressure cooker, add the soaked black chickpeas and enough water to cover them. Pressure cook for about 3-4 whistles or until the chickpeas are cooked through and tender. Drain any excess water and set aside.
  4. Heat oil in a pan or kadai over medium heat. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter. Then, add urad dal, asafoetida, dried red chillies, and curry leaves. Saute for a few seconds until fragrant.
  5. Add the chopped green chillies and saute for a minute.
  6. Add turmeric powder and salt. Mix well.
  7. Add the cooked black chickpeas to the pan and toss them gently with the spice mixture until well coated. Cook for another 2-3 minutes to allow the flavors to blend.
  8. Turn off the heat and garnish with grated coconut (if desired) and fresh coriander leaves.
  9. Serve the Karuppu Kondakadalai Sundal warm as a snack or as part of a meal. It can be enjoyed on its own or with some lemon wedges for an extra tangy flavor.

Karuppu Kondakadalai Sundal is a delicious and healthy snack that can be enjoyed by everyone. It is a great way to incorporate protein-rich black chickpeas into your diet.
