- 2-3 dried red chillies, broken into pieces
- 8-10 curry leaves
- 2 green chillies, finely chopped
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- Salt to taste
- Grated coconut (optional)
- Fresh coriander leaves for garnishing
Instructions:
- Rinse the black chickpeas (karuppu kondakadalai) under running water and soak them in enough water overnight or for at least 8 hours.
- After soaking, drain the water from the chickpeas and rinse them again.
- In a pressure cooker, add the soaked black chickpeas and enough water to cover them. Pressure cook for about 3-4 whistles or until the chickpeas are cooked through and tender. Drain any excess water and set aside.
- Heat oil in a pan or kadai over medium heat. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter. Then, add urad dal, asafoetida, dried red chillies, and curry leaves. Saute for a few seconds until fragrant.
- Add the chopped green chillies and saute for a minute.
- Add turmeric powder and salt. Mix well.
- Add the cooked black chickpeas to the pan and toss them gently with the spice mixture until well coated. Cook for another 2-3 minutes to allow the flavors to blend.
- Turn off the heat and garnish with grated coconut (if desired) and fresh coriander leaves.
- Serve the Karuppu Kondakadalai Sundal warm as a snack or as part of a meal. It can be enjoyed on its own or with some lemon wedges for an extra tangy flavor.
