Chana Sundal is a popular South Indian dish made with chickpeas (chana) that is typically served as a snack or as a prasadam (offering) during festivals. It is a nutritious and flavorful dish prepared with simple ingredients. Here’s the recipe:

Preparation time: 8 hours (for soaking chickpeas)
Cooking time: 20 minutes
Ready in: 8 hours 20 minutes

Ingredients:
  • 1 cup dried chickpeas (chana)
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • A pinch of asafoetida (hing)
  • 2-3 dried red chillies, broken into pieces
  • 8-10 curry leaves
  • 2 green chillies, finely chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chilli powder (optional)
  • Salt to taste
  • Grated coconut (optional)
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnishing
Instructions:
  1. Rinse the dried chickpeas (chana) under running water and soak them in enough water overnight or for at least 8 hours.
  2. After soaking, drain the water from the chickpeas and rinse them again.
  3. In a pressure cooker, add the soaked chickpeas and enough water to cover them. Pressure cook for about 3-4 whistles or until the chickpeas are cooked through and tender. Drain any excess water and set aside.
  4. Heat oil in a pan or kadai over medium heat. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter. Then, add cumin seeds, asafoetida, dried red chillies, and curry leaves. Saute for a few seconds until fragrant.
  5. Add the chopped green chillies and saute for a minute.
  6. Add turmeric powder, red chilli powder (if using), and salt. Mix well.
  7. Add the cooked chickpeas (chana) to the pan and toss them gently with the spice mixture until well coated. Cook for another 2-3 minutes to allow the flavors to blend.
  8. Turn off the heat and garnish with grated coconut (if desired) and fresh coriander leaves.
  9. Serve the Chana Sundal warm as a snack or as part of a meal. It can be enjoyed on its own or with some lemon wedges for an extra tangy flavor.

Chana Sundal is a healthy and delicious snack that can be enjoyed by everyone. It is a versatile dish that can also be served as a side dish with rice or roti.
