Wheat Flour Appam is a traditional South Indian snack made with wheat flour and jaggery. It is a sweet and fluffy pancake-like dish that is typically enjoyed during festive occasions. Here’s the recipe:
Preparation time: 15 minutes
Cooking time: 20 minutes
Ready in: 35 minutes
Ingredients:
- 1 cup wheat flour
- 1/4 cup jaggery, grated or powdered
- 1 ripe banana, mashed
- 1/2 cup grated coconut
- 1/2 teaspoon cardamom powder
- A pinch of salt
- 1/2 cup water (adjust as needed)
- Oil for frying
Instructions:
- In a mixing bowl, add wheat flour, grated jaggery, mashed banana, grated coconut, cardamom powder, and a pinch of salt. Mix well to combine the ingredients.
- Gradually add water to the mixture while stirring continuously. The consistency of the batter should be slightly thicker than a dosa batter. Mix until there are no lumps in the batter.
- Heat a paniyaram pan or appam pan and grease the cavities with a little oil.
- Pour a spoonful of the batter into each cavity of the pan. Cover the pan and cook on medium heat for a few minutes until the bottom side turns golden brown.
- Flip each appam using a spoon or skewer and cook the other side until golden brown and cooked through.
- Remove the appams from the pan and repeat the process with the remaining batter, adding more oil to the pan if needed.
- Serve the Wheat Flour Appams warm as a snack or as a dessert. They can be enjoyed on their own or with a side of coconut chutney or a drizzle of honey.
Wheat Flour Appams are a delicious and healthier alternative to traditional appams made with rice flour. They have a soft and fluffy texture with a subtle sweetness from the jaggery and banana. Enjoy them as a festive treat or as a delightful snack any time of the year.
